An educational short film created for Saving the Blue, an ocean charity based in Southern Florida dedicated to protecting various shark species in the Caribbean, Bahamas, and along the East Coast of North America.
Led by Dr. Phil Matich and Dr. Vital Helm, a team of scientists embarks on an expedition off the coast of Jupiter, Florida, to deploy a new, innovative four-pronged satellite tag on Scalloped and Great Hammerhead sharks.
These tags, known as smart position and temperature tags, aim to provide detailed data on the sharks' movements and potential overlaps with fishing areas. If such overlaps are detected, Saving the Blue recommends specific time and area closures to protect the sharks.
This method has proven to be an effective conservation strategy for these critically endangered species. Tagging expeditions like this one have been crucial in their protection in this region.
As apex predators, sharks are essential for the health of all ecosystems, including those that fisheries rely on for their livelihood. Consequently, the important data collected by Saving the Blue has been well-received by the fishing community, aiding in the gradual recovery of these ecosystems.
This expedition, along with many others, is funded and supported by Fahlo.
